Friday List...Sad Songs Say So Much
A while back when I had a brutal case of the blues, a friend made a mix CD for me called "The Saddest Songs in the World/Wallow Mix." In honor of that CD (which is still one of my favorites, blue or not), I'm posting my five of my all-time favorite sitting-in-the-dark-with-teddy-bears-and-knives songs. You know the ones: You play them when you're reading those letters you keep in the back of your closet, wondering why you ever broke up with whatshisname in the first place, and certain that no one else will love you that much again.

Not that I do that.

Wallow Mix '05:

I Grieve, Peter Gabriel
I'm Not in Love, 10cc
Hurt, Nine Inch Nails
Better Man, Pearl Jam
I've Been Loving You Too Long, Otis Redding

The truth is, I love sad songs even when I'm happy. Sad songs make me happy. Weird? Yeah, but I'll bet you have some mood music of your own. Care to share?

  2. Oh yeah, anything by COldplay. I listened to that cd over and over and over. Sometimes in the dark by myself but also in the car by myself. All the songs by Coldplay are sad even when their supposed to be happy.

  3. Okay, this is REALLY random, but one night in middle school when my mom was driving me home from a dance where my crush failed to notice me YET AGAIN, I heard, "Don't You Know What the Night Can Do," by Steve Winwood. I have created some sort of sense-memory association with that song, and now whenever I happen to hear it on an easy-listening station (while at the dentist's office, say), I am totally transported back to that sad night of middle-school angst.

I associate many cheesy songs with the pain of heartbreak at school dances: "More Than Words," by Extreme and "One More Try," by Timmy T. Can you believe I still remember those songs?

  5. Extreme's More Than Words! Oh wow, that takes me back. I associate that one with one specific guy, heartbreak, and two awful summers in Orlando. Same guy: Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" (not particularly a sad song, but sad by association) and anything by Rush.

  6. Depressing Song #1 has got to be Fake Plastic Trees from Radiohead. That song made me want to die when I was all alone in Edinburgh on Valentine's Day 1997. I sniffle just thinking about it.
