You can't just say...

You can’t just say to a friend, new or old, “I need to trust you. I need you to listen to me. I need you to hear me. I need you not to judge me. I need you to reciprocate.”

Or maybe you can.

I can't.

    Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens;
    Brown paper packages tied up with strings;
    These are a few of my favorite things.

    Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels;
    Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles;
    Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings;
    These are a few of my favorite things.

    Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes;
    Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes;
    Silver-white winters that melt into springs;
    These are a few of my favorite things.

    When the dog bites,
    When the bee stings,
    When I'm feeling sad,
    I simply remember my favorite things,
    And then I don't feel so bad.

  2. Why do we feel we HAVE to say that? Why can't our friends just know and step up? High expectations on our part or just low standards in choosing friends?

  3. Interesting thought. I think you and any of us can say those things, but sometimes, saying them is simply not effective.

    I have found that you have to have something they want, and you make them work for it, and the work they do to get what they want, is all of the things you just listed.

    Cynnical, yes. True? Maybe.

  4. But why, oh why, do we HAVE TO ASK? Isn't that obvious? They should give a class in high school on how to be someone's friend. So many people are SO bad at it.
