Inspired my my friend Angie Mizzell's post, My Story: The Soundtrack, and because I have been working on and off on a memoir-style (sort of) essay collection myself, I came up with my own soundtrack should they make a movie from my memoir (a la Eat Pray Love). A more apt title for mine would be Love, Drink, Cry....but it isn't. I posted this on Angie's blog as well, but wanted to share here. Soundtrack for my memoir, possibly. I have an actual iTunes playlist for this one called "Moving to Austin." I also have a playlist for 2009 called "The Shitshow," but I'd rather keep that one to myself for now. Even if you're not working on a memoir like the 10 billion of us who are, what is your soundtrack (or song) for this year? Did you have one for 2009? Is it mostly made up of The Cure? Should I have included "Deep in the Heart of Texas" on mine?

I don't know that I can come up with a whole soundtrack, but songs that have changed my life are:

The Very Thought of You by Billie Holliday (someone asked me to sing it in public, and I'm glad I did)
It Doesn't Often Snow at Christmas by the Pet Shop Boys (I listen to this song ALL YEAR LONG)
The Reflex by Duran Duran (because I got caught with it at church camp and got in trouble)
Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Leppard (because it always makes me FEEL like I'm in high school)
The whole soundtrack to the movie Amelie (because it puts me in the mood for love)
And, now, I look like a complete goober, but there you are.
Love, Drink, Cry... I'd be happy to play a supporting role in that one. And I'm more than honored to be on the list in your previous post. I'm sending you virtual chinese food, pink walls and a hug. I do think it's nice to have a place that feels like home... some people never find that. Your friends will stay with you no matter where you go. (although I'm currently circulating a petition to get you back to charleston.)
ReplyDeleteAndra, I LOVE that you sang Billie Holiday at a party. And what a great list! It didn't cross my mind to tie mine in to memories (though some of them - like Harvest Moon) are...it's more about the lyrics for me.
ReplyDeleteAngie, talking to you a couple of weeks ago reminded me how much I miss my writer friends. I've met other creatives here, but still feel like I'm on the outskirts of their community. I think if I keep reaching out and showing up to events, it will come in time. And I do know how lucky I am not to be "adrift"...I'm just "away."
If I go back to chapter one of my memoir in progress, I really must add Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk by Rufus Wainwright and Dancing Barefoot by Patti Smith. Can't believe I left those out!
